GRANJA BLAVA

The first aquaponic farm in Catalonia

Sustainable agriculture for Barcelona

Granja Blava is the city’s first aquaponic greenhouse under controlled climatic conditions and fed in a sustainable way.

We produce for restaurants and local shops in the province of Barcelona, who value good quality products and want to practice low-impact consumption.

Renovating an abandoned greenhouse

We decided to renovate an abandoned greenhouse on the outskirts of Barcelona, to restore the value of this lost land.

Our production model, however, adds even more value to this land: the yield of our crops is three times higher than that of a traditionally cultivated field.

A plot of land that used to grow 87,200 plants a year now grows 192,000 plants in the same period of time.

Towards a sustainable future

Our food is chemical-free and comes from local, low-impact production. In addition, the crops and fish are grown in a greenhouse with optimal and controlled conditions, protected from adverse weather conditions, ensuring continuous, faster and higher quality production.

Granja Blava aims to be a circular greenhouse that contributes to a healthier diet, in a more sustainable city, conscious of its low impact.

Our fish

To support agricultural production are our Siberian sturgeons with their waste. The aquaponic systems are capable of holding up to 720 sturgeons at the same time. In addition to feeding the plants with their organic waste, the sturgeons are cared for and bred to provide top quality meat – more than 800 kilos of fish are put on the market every year!

Why Siberian sturgeon?

The Siberian sturgeon was chosen because its reproductive cycle is one of the shortest in this fish family (7 to 8 years instead of 15), and because it can only be reared in freshwater, unlike other sturgeons that migrate between the sea and rivers.
Moreover, the Siberian sturgeon can be kept in canals, circular tanks, ponds or cages, and is therefore perfectly suited to our production system. Siberian sturgeon farming in Western Europe has been boosted by the recent ban on the export of caviar from the wild, to protect sturgeons endangered by dam construction, overfishing and pollution.

Environmentally friendly and careful production

We ensure that our fish can live in a production environment that guarantees them a stress-free rearing process, following a fully organic diet and resulting in high quality meat.

We carefully observe the handling and transfer of the fish, constantly monitoring them for diseases, because the welfare and health of our fish does not only depend on the quality we want to obtain for our products; it is also important to satisfy the needs of the Siberian sturgeon.

Do you want to try our sturgeon?

The flesh of Siberian sturgeon is very white, tender and delicate, without bones, and gives a very sweet sensation. Filleted or smoked, Siberian sturgeon in aromatic sauce is a dish that ignites the senses and the most hidden emotions of those who taste it.
